TG4's Laochra Gael next Tuesday (23rd January) features Tony McTeague.

This should be interesting as it will likely feature much footage from the '69, '71 and '72 finals which hasn't been broadcast any time recently.

I think it's actually correct AZ.

It translates literally as "it's true that today's footballers would learn a couple of things from the quiet man of ferbane," or Ferbane's quiet man.

So it's the way possessive nouns work i think - "an féar" is "the grass" but "fear an fhéir" is the way it would go for "the grass's man".

i think that's right but someone better at the irish may correct me!

Not to take away from the important issue of Tony McTeague being featured on Laochra Gael, but............

where did these gaelic gramatical intricacies originate. Were they handed down from the Tuatha De Dannan and the Fir Bolg or are they contrived inventions of the gaelgoiri scholars designed to make the language more difficult for us pale infected trash.

Tony Mac was some player, seen him play with Offaly and Ferbane. He had some sidestep and from placed balls he never missed. How Offaly could do with him now. He scored 14 points out of 16 in a league semi-final against Mayo. The match ended in draw and Offaly lost the replay.

Good to see another Offaly great getting recognition after the recent Dooleys programme. Best pound for pound GAA county in the country!
(By the way, is there any way of proving this claim scientifically? For use in pub arguments with non-Offaly heads. Offaly's success in both codes since 1970 say, between All Irelands, Leinsters, only county to have allstars in all positions in both codes etc, taking into account the small population base in comparison to Cork, Dublin etc. Along the lines of how boxers from different weight divisions are compared. We'd have to come out tops surely? Maybe somebody with more knowledge and energy than me could distill this into a handy formula that's easily remembered while drunk?)

Tough too in a good way. I remember being behind a goal in O´Connor Park when he burrowed his way in along the endline to squeeze in a goal at the near post.

Really enjoyed that last night. Brought back memories of running around Croke Park as a 10 year old when the lads were kicking in, I think it was befor a grounds tounament game, with my pen and autograph book. Tony was the first target and got a few more before I got shivery and ran back to the stand.

But anyway, he was a class act. Great pace, brilliant balance and ball control and that sidestep. Funnily I didn't remember how unorthodox his place kicking was. How the feck did he manage to land fifties with such a short run up and for such a slight looking lad too. I thought the goal they showed against Donegal was absolute class. Paddy Fenning punched across and Tony nonchalantly just sidefoots it into the net on the volley and just turns and walks away as ifhe had just put a bottle of milk in the fridge.

Oh yeah, enjoyed the clip of that referee, Patsy Devlin, I think, from Tyrone. He made an artform of exaggerated hand/arm signals when awarding frees. He was always good entertainment at a game.

Pity it was only half an hour and disappointed they didn't ask him about the short run up.

Great stuff though.

There was a great Western on before the Dooley's episode. Breakheart Pass with Charles Bronson in it.
