Website watch
We keep an eye on the different GAA websites from around the country

This week: http://www.uibhfhaili.com

Mantra: Unofficial Offaly GAA site

Content: There's no prouder GAA supporter than a proud Offaly supporter and this unofficial fanzine proves it.

The home page has an inflatable shark in a swimming pool above the large exclamation "Don't Watch Offaly, Support Offaly!" and it goes on from there.

Although it looks slightly amatuerish, it's still an excellent reference point for fans of the Faithful with a no-nonsense sidebar with a smart menu.

After a brief rummage, we unveiled the meaning of the shark. The columnist who seems to run the website is called 'Lone Shark' and an informed one he is too.

There's an excellent section with all the press clippings regarding Offaly GAA players over the last few years, plus a section with songs about the county's stars. Our favourite is "That's Joe Dooley" to the tune of "That's Amore".

The forum is hopping with self-styled "Bogmen" looking to have a clip at whichever county happens to be currently hindering Offaly's championship progress, and also features some intriguing local gossip.

'Lone Shark' seems to rule with an iron fist, but it keeps the chat amusing or informed or both.

Verdict: Smart and fun. Not very elaborate though. 6/10

Allow me to clear this up once and for all, lest I be accused of taking credit I'm not due here. While I am involved to a considerable degree, the occasional poster known as Pool Shark is the man who does most of the labour with regard to keeping everything running etc. I am merely an enthusiastic supporter who talks a lot. Pretty much.

Dont mind them L0ne Shark, there's no "iron fist" around here. It's the Content that's important, not swanky menu bars and pop-ups or the like.

However on this part of cyperspace, we are seeing a proliferation of new pictures for some folks. BnMm - what's with the roaring Lion? Think you're King of the Jungle or something or is it just that you can shout louder than anyone else? And Turk - an extinct big hairy Mammoth! Shouldn't you be using a picture of the centrepiece of Christmas Dinner, or a Doner Kebab or the like.

I mean, if I used something like this:
Image
You wouldn't be very happy with how it squeezes up the important info, despite the fact that the likeness is uncanny.

I havent exactly looked around at any other counties supporters websites but i think this one is class!!! And a lot of the thanks has to go to the two sharks! but its the members that make it what it is.

Dont know when was the last time i looked at the Hogan Stand, its just full of slaggers and people who know nothing about Offaly GAA! Thats what makes this mighty stuff!

6/10 is probably fair enough for the main website but the forum for me gets a 10/10 for the content. But in fairness, i think we have a nice number of people and contributers in the forum as it is! We dont need foreigners coming in and disrupting things by talking pure shite and making a cod of it all! Only people who can talk sense should be welcome!

And one more thing, there might be X amount of members in it, but I know of many more that view the forum but havent joined, i can name 30-40 easily!

I think we all deserve a pat on the back for this!!

6/10

Well I'd rather have got 6/10 than a higher score and have to endure pictures of Aine from Sligo and other nonsense!!!

I agree. I like this site for pure Offaly GAA talk, and it is knowledgable stuff. There's a good mix of views here, and none of the 'fishing' and 'wind up merchants' that plague the GAA DB, which I am also a member of.

I would agree that *IF* you were interested in attracting people to the main site then an overhaul could be done, maybe results sections, more interviews etc, but to be honest the main reason I look in here is the Forum, and I'd not change anything about that.

Cheers to the 2 Sharks and BnM man (I think) for giving us a corner of the Faithful County in Cyberspace :)

Still, fair dues to all concerned. Someone has to put in the time, money and effort to keep a website going.

[ self-styled "Bogmen" ] that's a bit culchie vs capital isn't it???
