Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
Lyng quits Cavan panel
23/03/2010 - 08:29:06
Michael Lyng has quit the Cavan Senior football panel, despite starting in the Breffni County's attack in three of the last five outings in the Allianz National Football League.
The Cavan Gaels club man started the first two league games against Roscommon and Louth, and featured as a substitute against Louth, before starting in the Round 4 clash against Wexford.
However the 25-year old failed to feature last Sunday as Cavan lost by 1-14 to 0-14 against Sligo at Markievicz Park.
Cavan GAA PRO Declan Woods confirmed that Lyng has withdrawn from the Cavan Senior setup, though the reasons for Lyng's exit are unclear.
Lyng was among the five Cavan players who claimed glory with the DCU footballers early this year.
Lyng was impressed for his college as they claimed the O'Byrne Cup title following victory over Louth and a first Sigerson Cup title since 2006 at the expense of UCC.

Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
On paper this would look a good opportunity for Offaly to record their first ever competitive* win under floodlights and their first away league win in 2 years.
Therein lies the problem...its an away game under floodlights!
Cavan had a big win over Down with their U21s last night. I'm not sure how that affects the senior team, but it is a boost.
Luckily for Offaly's "under construction" full back line, Seanie Johnston is a long term injury. Pacy poachers would worry the current Offaly backs.
I'd say it'll be something like 1-11 to 1-10. Maybe Offaly to edge it!
* Offaly did beat Dublin under lights in Portarlington to win the John Knight memorial trophy in 2005.

Paul McConway at full back. What are people's views on this?
I wouldn't have thought it his natural home.

Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
Paul McConway was switched to corner/full back against Antrim and kept their dangerman quiet towards the end. I would have thought that Paul is more of a half back but the selectors are probably going with the way we finished the game last week. Ciaran Kiely is selected at half back but I'd guess that he would do a stint in the full line also.
Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
Does anyone know what the story is with Brian Connor ?????
Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
This is a hard one to call guys!! Good win last Sunday will have helped and Cavan were brutal in Tullamore last year. But you cant get away from our dreadful away form. Despite losing by a point in Sligo, we were dreadful!!!! Both teams are on 6 points and Cavan will be expecting to beat us in their own backyard if they want to keep up their push for promotion.
As always with me, I think if we get enough ball into shaper and niall mac, we can win this game!!!! And midfield are going to have to play the full 70 mins. They completely went out of it against roscommon and sligo. Can't comment on the Antrim game as I was not there but that performance should have them thinking we can beat Cavan.
So I went and backed the draw at 15/2 today

Mackey gives Cavan the edge
NFL DIVISION THREE Cavan 0-20 Offaly 0-14: CAVAN EASED their relegation fears with a classy win at Kingspan/Breffni Park.
In-form attacker Cian Mackey was the star of the show. Mackey’s five first-half points helped ease the hosts into a 0-8 to 0-7 interval lead. Cavan went 0-12 to 0-7 in front before Offaly talisman Niall McNamee helped hoist the visitors level at 0-12 apiece after 52 minutes. Cavan notched four unanswered points thereafter though and while John Reynolds and Scott Brady gave Offaly hope, Cavan hit four more to seal the issue.

Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
That's a disappointing result up in Cavan. It was a chance to break the away day blues, and put Offaly in with a last day shout of Promotion at home to Louth. Now it's a case of making the best of the Louth game and gearing up for Meath.
Disappointing, but I suppose there'll be no Leinster Championship games away from home under lights

Shane Gavin. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

Its depressing to think what Meath will do in the championship if Cavan could register 20 scores in a league game.
And yet Antrim will top the division and we conceded only 9 scores to them.
Theres no way that home and away can make that much difference.............I dont know.

Re: Offaly vs. Cavan NFL 27/03/2010
What was the verdict on the backs? 16 of the Cavan points were from play!
On that sort of form, we'd barely have kept it kicked out to a Division 1 team.
