Offaly in 2010

If ever there was a thread that was destined to look foolish in the future this is it, but just for pig iron (it’s a local phrase!) I said I’d see how people though Offaly teams would evolve in the coming years. So for sheer personal amusement, I’ve had a go at picking the Offaly teams that will start the Championships in the summer of 2010. There’s a lot of ifs and buts and Godonlyknows, and I've no doubt there's a lot of great young lads out there I haven't seen yet, but I’d be interested to see what people think about who I’m overestimating/underestimating etc. There will be unexpected retirements, injuries, but all things being equal, this is my best guess!

I cant believe you've dropped Ciaran McManus. Any man who played Sigerson as long as he did will surely be around forever.

And sure maybe Sid will have come out of retirement by then.

The two O'Sullivan brothers would surely come into the reckoning - providing they stay off the sauce...

Sullivans

Assuming you mean the Sullivans from Rhode rather than two young lads I haven't heard of, Shane was a judgement call, but Padraig to be honest looks a long way off to me. Rightly or wrongly I would have had a lot of lads in front of him in terms of this year's U21 team, and I certainly wouldn't consider him in the same class as the brother.

So you reckon Brendan Murphy will be off the scene by the time he's 29, but Donal Franks is going to make a come back in his late 30's? :)

I don't think I've ever got those two names the right way around yet. Hopefully I managed it for the paper at the weekend

I'll be honest I don't think Brendy will be there beyond 25 or 26. So much of his game is based around pace, that when that starts to go he could find himself becoming an average hurler very quickly. Be nice if it was otherwise, but to be honest in intercounty hurling I'd say four or five out of six are 25 or less on all teams. Only the truly exceptional last beyond that. Defenders and midfielders tend to have a longer shelf life at the top level.

very interesting to see the way some lads have gone back since then 5 years ago they were future prospects now some are struggling to make club teams. paul cleary ay full forward do you still think he should be tryed there LS or what were you thinking at the time.. :?:
good to see though 10 are still on the panel and some of the rest have been involved last year so your hurling personnel is bang on. for the football however something has gone horribily wrong..

and you were bang on about unexpected retirements!! well maybe not retired yet but who could have predicted diarmuid horan to leave the panel..
