Offaly Vs Waterford-your thoughts?/ The Championship so far?

Post by midfield »

How will Offaly fair out against Waterford ? I think they could have a great chance but would be worried about the Waterford forwards. How do you think the other game will fair out. The Offaly Waterford game is a unique pairing and possibly the first time they have played each other in Senior championship? If its a double bill in thurles it promises to be the great day of hurling.
Incidentally loooking at our nearest neighbours Tipp and their win in the Munster final how far more will they go.

i think that we will beat waterford if our backs can hurl like they did against limerick and id be confident of our forwards to keep the scoreboard ticking over. as for playing them in championship we played them in carlow a few years ago on the same evening carlow beat us in the football .we lost by a few in the end waterford wer strong on the nite.
great history hoping for a better future

Very well done to all involved Saturday. Was great to see Offaly playing some fast snappy hurling. Everybody out there gave it there all which is the one thing ya want to see from an Offaly team.

Next up Waterford. A huge challenge it has to be said. Waterford are in a position now that they have alot to prove and i hope we're not on the backlash from their bad performance against Clare. I fear the Waterford attack will do too much damage. One thing about Offaly over the last number of years is we seem to give up a big score to most opposition even with our backs clearing alot of ball. Like even on Saturday night we conceded 18 points. Thats the big worry. Davey Fitz will also have Waterford hugely fired up and i can see them playing a fairly physical game.

It would be great to see another big performance from our boys. There are brilliant hurlers in the county without question. Physically the county just doesnt have these mobile 6 footers that all the big guns have. We have a few here and there but not on a par with the likes of kilkenny, Galway, Tipp etc. Gym work can help players grow out but not grow up so its of little benefit. However even so Offaly have some real talented hurlers that have huge skill levels and are very pacey.

Theres no need to fear Waterford. Give it a good lash. We've beaten them in a few league games over the last couple of years so why not, why not go out and tear into them and show the pride and passion that is always associated with Offaly GAA.

Such a morale booster saturday night they must have a great chance .Not only did they stand up sat night they gave them a nice beating .The likes of molloy & bergin will come on a tonne from that and those two especially have gone well against waterford (even if it was league ) .Tell you what perfect timming as a confidence booster for the u21 .The last time we played in championship (in carlow ) against waterford they tried to murder us (by getting goals and beating us as much as possible ) they couldnt do it .yeah they won by about 10 points but we more than matched them in the second have .I wouldnt have any fears of them at all .If we can do what limerick done last year and stay with them untill the last 10 mins we will take them .
ps fair play to joe brady ,took a dirty belt and any time after that when a limerick player seemed he might react when ball just gone ,brady was over backing up making sure he was there if something happened .A small thing (not in other counties ) but good to see in our team .

That poll clearly reflects wishful thinking!
77% got it 100% wrong with predicting Offaly and Galway wins and only 5% got it right.

Hard luck on yesterday. WD were not great. Acres of space seemed to be available to Offaly players between WD midfield and half back lines and behind half back line on one or two occasions. However I don't think Clinton Hennessy had to make any major saves yesterday (could be wrong there) and ye were going to need goals to win. This seemed to be mainly due to a lack of ball into full forwards rather than anything special from WD full backs. Ken McGrath did ok but fluffed at least one clearance which Bergin should have capitalized on.

the WD - Offaly match was more like a challenge compared to the intensity of the second one. I like to see Galway do well (in fact I like to see anyone except cork or KK do well) but you have to credit Cork for their spirit and hurling in the second half.

WD should have enough to beat Wexford but can't see them beating Tipp / KK / cork on yesterday's evidence.
