Offaly 7-19 Galway 2-7

THE first game in pursuit of the two in a row went easily for Offaly as they had 26 scores from all angles and directions in a powerful display of hurling. They will have opened the eyes of Tipperary and New Jersey/Kilkenny the other teams in the hurling division with their strengths.

Offaly were completely on top in this contest, and after 16 minutes were 2-10 to 0-3 in front. They were picking scores of at will, with the quartet of Donal Broderick, Damien Clifford, Ken Moore and Diarmuid Sexton unstoppable.

Clifford had the first major when he linked with Broderick, while Moore had the second more of an individual effort.

Galway's points all came from the stick of Tom Murphy from frees, but Ronan Sheedy was trying extremely hard on the 40 under tough circumstances.

Offaly's third goal arrived after 18 minutes with Broderick rattling the net after a short solo run. It was followed by a point from the same player, but the next two scores were goals when points could have been chipped over. They were both by Clifford, with his second getting little applause from anyone with a sportsmanlike sense. The scoreboard must be in mind at some point of the contest.

Galway had their best period of the half in the last five minutes with Sheedy again very active for the Tribesmen. On 24 minutes he worked hard to pull down a free from Murphy that dropped short and buried the ball in the net. He followed it with a third chance on the ground after Alan Gleason did well to deny him on his first two chances for his and Galway's second goal.

It was more of the same for the second 30, with Offaly again outscoring their opponents easily. Moore had a goal in the first minute when Clifford had a chance to chip over but declined.

They added seven points to Galway's three as the game took on a pedestrian pace. Thankfully wiser heads prevailed and the game was shortened in the interest of all on board.

Offaly will be delighted to have gotten the game under their belts. They were streets ahead of their rivals, with the play of Darren Reilly, Diarmuid Sexton, Donal Broderick and Ken Moore a delight to watch.

Dave Simms could not be faulted, while Ronan Sheedy and Tom Murphy were others to show fight for Galway.

I wonder how many of these are actually Offaly born hurlers? I'm guessing the two Gleesons are (K/K I think??) but not too many of the other names there would be names we'd be used to on Offaly teams.
Kevin Egan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.
