Incidentally, that does bring up another issue which is a little bugbear of mine.

The only legal contact tackle in Gaelic Football is the shoulder to shoulder charge - yet this is a perfect example of when you do it well enough to knock the other guy over, you get whistled?

I personally believe football would be a lot better game if the likes of this was allowed, because it would give defenders a legitimate tool to use to unbalance a guy without sly little pulls and drags as have become the norm.

Player(s) may tackle an opponent for the ball.
Provided that he has at least one foot on the ground,
a player may make a side-to-side charge on an opponent-
(a) who is in possession of the ball, or
(b) who is playing the ball, or
(c) when both players are moving in the direction of the ball to play it.

It all depends on how liberally you interpret Point C.
Was the incoming man strictly moving in the direction of the ball?
He was initially, but wasn't as the tackle was being executed.

If you slow it down the tackle wasnt necessarily shoulder to shoulder.it starts there but ends up hitting him in the chest. I can see how the ref gave a free in this instance.

A great hit either way.

It could also be the case that that kind of tackle could be deemed "dangerous play" by the referee. Those kind of tackles don't generally hurt that much as long as the tackled player can see it coming.

i didnt see anything in that tackle to suggest the tackler was attempting to play the ball... if anything its clearly apparent hes playing the man....

I suppose it is tricky to tell off a view like that if your man had the hit lined up from way back or whether he was moving towards the ball while the ball was moving perpendicular, if you follow my drift.

Perhaps I'm acting like an old man reminiscing for once-upon-a-time stuff, but the overall point stands though. All too often I've seen a shoulder charge executed so well that it knocks the other guy off his feet and as a result the ref gives a free.

It is a shoulder that harks back to a bygone age and he probably wouldnt have been whistled for it 20 years ago.
Just to show that the same player can have an equally destructive impact with the ball in his hands....
