Daly finally hangs up Offaly boots

Wednesday, December 6

Former Offaly All Star Cathal Daly has announced his retirement from the intercounty scene, for the second time.

The Tullamore clubman revealed that he was hanging up his Faithful County boots at the beginning of 2006 but returned to the green white and amber jersey in the Bank of Ireland Leinster SFC semi-final against Wexford. The 31 year old also made a substitute’s appearance against Dublin in the provincial final versus Dublin.

Daly made his Senior debut in 1995 and won a Leinster title (1997) and National League crown (1998) during his 11-year intercounty career.

Offaly have been back in training under new manager Pat Roe since mid November. Former Westmeath attacker PJ Ward is amongst the new faces on the training pitch.

best of luck to cathal in his retirement.. a pure gentlem, on and off the field.. always wore the Offaly jersey with pride!
he was always to the fore when offaly played.. (esprecially stuck out from the crowd with socks down and shin gurards on!!!) :o
fondly remember waiting on the side of the field for the final whistle to blow in the Leinster final against meath in 97! what a day it was!

He was some corner back in his day - a great weapon for us to have in that he pretty much negated anyone he came up against. I remember Joe Brolly giving out about him after the league win, saying that he was up to all sorts and because of Offaly's reputation as a fast young team that was great to watch, he got away with it. Thoroughly enjoyed that.

He was never effective at full back or centre back for the county when he was beuing swapped around to help out other gaps, but in my lifetime we've never had a better corner back.

A tipped cap to the man certainly.

Best of luck Froggy. A sound lad, and I'm sure he'll be tormenting forwards in Offaly for another couple of years at least.
