Offaly minor hurlers

I don't think any players from Ferban/Belmont made the county minor team. That if true is most surprising as they have a serious chance of winning the Offaly Minor A Hurling title this year. One would expect our minor manager, who has been coaching this age group since they were 12 to know the best minor hurlers in the county. When Offaly won minor hurling titles dual players such as Finbar Cullen and James Grennan made a valuable contribution.

I think Finbar could be overage this year, while Sean is concentrating on his Leaving Cert. Big loss to the minors though.

The big issue though is parents, very few encourage the kids out to play football and hurling.
Kids are basically unfit, I can see now a situation where we are going to have to do fitness training as part of training u10s and 12s in the not too distannt, as opposed to skills and games.
Kids have poor coordination and these are all things that need to be brought in to the curriculem in National school.

Absolutely right.
Co-ordination and basic ball and movement skills are already part of the primary school curriculum, which should be implemented in every school in Ireland..

and are far less likely to give their own time to teams outside school time - fact

clubs need to get people into schools to develop the basic skills and interest in playing.
you can see the clubs who put the effort into the local schools as they get all the kids out and generally the kids have better skills

Unfortunately what you say is true. As I wrote, the full PE curriculum should be implemented in every school in Ireland. Along with a lot of other things (as long as nothing interferes with preparations for communion/ confirmation - but that's another argument).
You may have a point about female teachers though I have to say I know a few who do their job very well in this regard. My point is that even if every teacher in every school did fulfil their PE obligations properly it would only be a drop in the ocean of what would be needed. The days of the principal taking lads for training before school starts or afterwards are gone in most places. It still happens occasionally in the school where I teach (not in Offaly) but the time is being squeezed by so many other things that it's getting rarer. Interesting to hear how this is approached in Kilkenny. I'd say the same would be true of football in Kerry, where they have a production line of teachers with football backgrounds. Ideally an initiative to encourage teachers/ mentors in all counties would be put in place centrally by the GAA - in reality it's not always likely that a young teacher will be employed in his or her own county any more but maybe the rising tide would lift all the boats. I thought the Croke Park agreement was a lost opportunity in this regard, whereby teachers have to work an extra hour a week (no complaints - any teacher worth his or her salt is doing a lot more than that already) but training teams can't be counted towards this. It's actually a disincentive to someone to take it on because they still have to do the extra time elsewhere.

All the money thats pumped into the Dubs and there was hardly a 1000 of "youse" in Tullamore, yez might follow them in an All Ireland final, but as regards the hurling, yes yez have a fine senior team and will give Kilkenny socks of it next Sunday and the best of luck to yez!
