We have a system with five group games for every team, followed by either a quarter final or a relegation semi final - that's six games, which is a lot to fit in. It's all the more so when you allow for the fact that we can't play SFC on a weekend when the county hurlers are out, or hurling championship when the footballers are playing, due to dual players.

What we have now is a system whereby the clubs have two distinct seasons, but the players have a master fixture list that is being adhered to. It might not be absolutely ideal for anyone, but I think it is a pretty good compromise all round. I certainly wouldn't agree with this:

I'm not saying it's wrong, I don't have the definite answers, but there is a structure there and it beats anything that I could think of as an alternative.

I also agree that county finals in October are not such a bad thing either. In an ideal world I would argue that the year could start a bit later and you wouldn't have to have club championships in April, but that goes back to the point above - six weeks of fixtures for each code is a lot - it's hard enough fit them in now, without trying to adjust the four weeks played in late Spring as well.
