Re: Offaly Club Hurling 2026
Its covered by offaly live gaa.
Basically two lads who played senior A few years ago played junior.
They both thought they could play but were not regraded despite not playing senior for a couple of years.
The game should be conceded if I'm correct regarding the rules but clodaigh gaels offered a replay.
Neither the players nor the club realised it

Re: Offaly Club Hurling 2026
I wonder did they play in all games this year ? Are other teams going to have a grievance if they played illegal players against them in games that possibly could have cost them knockout hurling ??

Yes and what is going to be done to stop this from happening again. It’s very hard for clubs that are solely junior clubs that don’t have a senior team to pick from to compete also.
Would it be worth looking at changing things up, have a championship with just junior teams in it, early junior Championship games are hard won especially if senior teams hold back players to bolster their junior teams, but then I know there’s an argument for players in those clubs that maybe aren’t senior level where do they play.
What are the regulations regarding naming a squad at the start of the year?

I think if you havent played senior in two years + you should be allowed play whichever grade you want.

To be fair, I don't get the sense from reading about this that the club on the other end feels hard done by or anything, it seems to be an administrative issue far more than trying to gain a competitive advantage.
As a former club secretary, I'm sympathetic, these things can happen all too easily!

Agree. Neither of them had hurled at all in 4/5 years as far as I knowgreenairfield wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2026 1:41 pm I think if you havent played senior in two years + you should be allowed play whichever grade you want.

I've a memory of Ger Treacy playing most of the Senior A games in 2024.Wingbackassassin wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2026 10:43 amAgree. I thought the new rule was that you name 15 for senior c'ship and everyone else is free to hurl at the lower grade?
Do lads still have to be regraded on top of this?
Or does the fact that they are permission players add an extra layer of admin?

Re: Offaly Club Hurling 2026
So you name your senior or intrermediate players then you name your junior players for example.
But my guess is ger treacy wasnt named a junior player which leaves him then ineligable for junior.
A silly rule that probably needs clarity on it iv heard a number or clubs get caught out with it.

They probably named them in their senior first 15 at the start of the year thinking they were not playing hurling at all this year to free up players to hurl for second team to help them out

Re: Offaly Club Hurling 2026
If that was the case, could a club not pull 15 club member names out a hat as their senior 15 to free up players for second team?hamstrings wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2026 1:47 pm They probably named them in their senior first 15 at the start of the year thinking they were not playing hurling at all this year to free up players to hurl for second team to help them out

No. Because the 15 named have to be graded Senior, where their most recent game was a Senior game.
There's something we're not being told here. Either the lads were on the list or they weren't. And if they weren't listed, I don't see why they couldn't play Junior. Otherwise, what's the point.
Unless it is something to do with the 'permission' thing. But we're not being told that.

From talking to a club secretary on this regarding rules on regrading they are different for clubs with two teams and 3 teams. Even if if a player hasn’t played senior in years if the club have 3 teams my understanding is they have to be regraded. It’s not a good situation, lads missing out on hurling due to inconsistent and unclear rules. I’ve heard of a good few clubs being confused on it.

Why not bring in a rule if over 30 years of age and you havent hurled in in two years you can hurl for whatever team ya want?

I should know this as I managed the re-gradings for our club every year.BlackrockOffaly wrote: ↑Fri Oct 09, 2026 6:54 pm From talking to a club secretary on this regarding rules on regrading they are different for clubs with two teams and 3 teams. From memory, the 15 you list must have played at the higher grade the year before eg. If they didn’t play, say senior championship in 2025, they can’t be listed on the first 15 in 2026. And that 15 is only for league gradings, totally separate to championship.
So by that I mean that if player Joe played senior championship in 2025, is building a house in 2026 and decides to only play junior championship in 2026, he has to be formally re-graded by the club irrespective if he’s not on the 15 listed previously. A club can only regrade a maximum of 5 players I think in one year.
And obviously then, if he does play senior at any time thereafter in 2026, he immediately can’t go back to junior in 2026. And would have to be regraded again in 2027 to play junior.
I’m not aware of different rules for clubs with 3 teams as have never had that luxury.
If I’m right in the above, what I suspect happened here is that the players weren’t listed on the first 15 players and the club thought they were ok to play junior championship thereafter. .
