Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
New year, new manager, new coach, 4 county seniors starting, same old Belmont.
What a vintage display from the Mountain Men of Kinnitty.
Shane Kinsella with one of the best scores I’ve ever seen in a 5 minute cameo.
Paddy Rigney outstanding on Oisin Kelly.
Paddy Delaney imperious at centre back.
Kinnitty came to hurl championship, Belmont thought it was a league game. Lots of hard pulling and tackling that the Belmont, Ferbane and Shannonbridge men did not want to know about.

Vintage display from kinnitty is a fair stretch, they worked hard and had some good individual performances however they were very poor aswell.faithfulfanatic wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 7:03 pm New year, new manager, new coach, 4 county seniors starting, same old Belmont.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
I watched Ballinamere v Birr on the box on Thursday evening, so obviously only saw what was broadcast. I thought Ballinamere tried to complicate things to a level beyond their capabilities.
They appeared to lack the basics, like a first touch. It appeared like the ground was rock hard (it couldn’t be, not on this summer), the ball was pinging around and they couldn’t control it. Passes didn’t stick, passes played behind men. Just too many mistakes, including a terrible mistake for the goal. And was that a football style defensive system, with bodies defending the scoring area? And one man in the full-forward line?
They suffered from similar ‘smartness’ last year too when they might have beaten Shinrone in the semi-final. Had nine months to learn that much and appear to have learned nothing.
Nothing flashy about Birr. Solid defence, including a good half-back line (something that appeals about the Watkins Harding Miller unit). A serious work ethic. And they have forwards. Likely quarter-finalists, potential semi-finalists.
Kinnitty beat Belmont because they worked harder than the league winners. In fairness, they were due a win over Belmont, but that’s not how it works. Belmont, another one with plans to beat the band, but lacking the work rate to see it through.
First half, Kinnitty appeared to place their puckout about five yards beyond their half-forward targets, but sorted this during the second half. Corrigan is competent in goals, and they competed massively for anything on the ground. Both hit more wides than scores, but Kinnitty kept their composure better and finished well.
Those results leave the group wide open – it is a first round, after all – and probably puts a bit of pressure on Shinrone more than anyone else.

Belmont kinnitty was an terrible game , both hit alot wides , nearly all the scoring was from placed balls in the first half
There was some very obvious changes that needed to be made at HT and they didn't do it you reap what you Sow
Was impressed with rigney and delaney ,
oisin kelly played better when he was back in midfield for the last 10 mins or so
Mark egan a former county player did little wrong for belmont
David nally was a big loss , if belmont want to progress there going to cut ties with starting the status qou and gamble on some of the younger players.
Saying that they were missing kevin nugent david nally that would bring a bit more to the team

Kilcormac/Killoughey’s 1st team won Round 1 by 26 points
Kilcormac/Killoughey’s 2nd team won Round 1 by 21 points
Kilcormac/Killoughey’s 3rd team won Round 1 by 22 points.
They are nailed on certainties to win the U20 championship for the 5th year in a row.
It looks like they are in line to hoover up a lot of championships over the coming years to add to last year’s Senior A and Senior B championships.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
Being the ream to beat is vulnerable position
Every team are going to do everything they can to upset the odds
But looks like kk have found themselves the pillar of strength in offaly hurling once again
Birt held that mantle for awhile and it helped the senoir intercounty

For me, Kilcormac-Killoughey's greatest feat this year is having FIVE adult teams (Senior A, Senior B, Junior A, Junior B and Junior C). They must have nearly a hundred men for that.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
That is bananas. Outside of city clubs, that must be unheard of - I've certainly never heard of any club outside of Dublin putting that many adult teams on the field in one code. Even then, it tends to be reserved for the Ballybodens, Cualas, Kilmacuds, St. Brigid's etc. - i.e. the super teams picking from populations of 20,000 and up.Plain of the Herbs wrote: ↑Sat Jul 27, 2024 7:36 pm For me, Kilcormac-Killoughey's greatest feat this year is having FIVE adult teams (Senior A, Senior B, Junior A, Junior B and Junior C). Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
Coolderry entered 4 adult teams a few years back.
Senior
Intermediate
Junior A
Junior B
It was a stretch and no easy feat to manage with squad management up and down between the grades, especially due to limited numbers. Probably too much of a stretch if I was being fully honest and all teams may have suffered a bit in my opinion when we did it. I remember we had a huge number of subs for the Junior B final in 2018 or 2019 which may have prompted the entry of a 4th team.
KK doing five teams is great to see and more power to them. The more numbers playing, the better. If you can get them down to the field, its a good thing if you ask me.

Over time you would like to think that tullamore could offer something tangible on the hurling front. As it is with the numbers they have it looks likely that the best they will offer to the football team is 3 or 4 players.

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2024
Comparing the Kilcormac-Killoughey team that lined out a fortnight ago with the one that won last year’s final, I see there are four changes in personnel, with four U19s coming in. Granted some may be for short term injuries.
James Mahon replaced Brecon Kavanagh in the full-back line;
Ter Guinan replaced Enda Grogan in the half-back line;
Daniel Hand came in at corner-forward, Colin Spain moved out to midfield replacing Cathal Kiely;
Leigh Kavanagh replaces James Gorman in the forwards.
Imagine replacing Kavanagh, Grogan, Kiely and Gorman and not weakening the side.
And then Lochlann Kavanagh scored 4-3 for the Senior Bs!
