Even if Mr Bergin was out having a few scoops the other night (although we have been reliabley informed he wasn't!) what harm was he doing?! Are these hard working players not entitled to a social life of some form! Many a weekend night i have seen numerous members of the football panel enjoying themselves in some of the local hostelries in tullamore...i am not naming these panelists, as I feel they are entitled to have a Social life...........like any other young person their age! :|

Nothing wrong with a few scoops.
But drinking two nights before a championship game (WHICH WE NOW KNOW DIDNT HAPPEN) would be wrong, it would be letting the rest of the panel down. Thats what my concern was.
We are far enough behind the likes of kilkenny, cork and the rest without givin them a head start due to alcohol induced lethargy (WHICH WE NOW KNOW WASNT THE CASE).

Hold your horses here - nothing was accused. A question was asked, the question was answered unequivocally, and everyone seems happy with it. It has now sparked a somewhat wider debate, or may have at any rate, and one we're happy to indulge if people want to go down that road.

If Arbarg or anyone else had said "Bergin was drinking on..... " then obviously that would be a different matter - but he didn't.

Finis.

Eh ,in case you didnt notice this forum is taken seriously, by just about everyone who uses it.
And the day when we start deleting topics and editing them is never gonna happen because as I said before this is an open foum that ENCOURAGES discussion not some small time forum with a dictatorial censorship commitee.

OK enough!!
As Ls has clearly stated I did not accuse anyone of anything. I simply posed a very serious question about one of our top players on the panel.
My question was answered and I apologised for any intent that was felt by any parties.
So in conlcusion,
Game over, insert coin, goodnight Irene, Good Luck and Thanks

It would display that the player in question has a rock solid marriage in that in times of crisis the first person he turns to is his spouse. Could only paint him in a positive light really when you think about it.

To be fair it was a question and not a statement. I think we can all agree on that. If someone took that as a statement and then started spreading it as a fact they would be responsible not arbag.

You are right LS, I should have clarified my point. The player (any player) owes nothing to the supporters really. In fact, what people sometimes forget is these players are some of the counties biggest supporters. So we can't say anything to them no more than I can say anything to you for having a few pints.

However I do totally agree with the fact that they owe their fellow panellists, for the reasons you've mentioned. They are putting in the same work and should expect the same commitment.

As for CFJs 2 weeks before a game. If anyone thinks a fella can't go out and have a couple of drinks and try to meet up with a young one two weeks before a game you need to evaluate your priorities in life. They are not robots!!

Agree completely. After all, if a player has a girlfriend back in Offaly, with the recognition he gets at home it's not like misbehaving in the Bridge House is an option....

....another of the downsides to being a county player that the GPA really should be addressing. :P

Who were the Offaly Footballers that were in Copper Face Jacks? If that was true you should be able to name and let them defend themselves. It's not fair just hanging Joe Bergin and not doing the same to the four of five offaly footballers.

Bergin wasn't "hanged". We now know that it definitely wasn't him. I say again, as far as we know Joe Bergin was not on the beer before the game against Kilkenny

Can I just celebrate figuring out how to upload an avatar by telling everybody to CALM DOWN, CALM DOWN!
Thought that was funny myself, I am very easily pleased though.
As somebody who was at the Carlow + Waterford double header a few years ago (and stayed to the end of both despite being from the big ball end of the county...) I think we should be fairly happy that there are signs of improvement in both codes. Yes, we had a disastrous league in both, and it's unfortunate that there are repercussions into the championship campaign from this but I believe we have the makings of a decent summer ahead.
Just wanted to say also that I couldn't make it to Portlaoise yesterday and had to watch on the box. The Offaly support was savage. Fair play to all of ye who made their voices heard, you can be sure it gave a great boost to both teams. Sure, it's not great to see lads leaving early but we've all had to do that at some stage and nobody knows what somebody else might have to get home to - anyways I don't think the support can be faulted and hopefully that'll be a trend that grows over the next weeks and months.
