Hyper - the man with the inside line!!

Not one of our more star studded line ups at this age bracket - though in saying that our more illustrious teams of the last few years haven't exactly delivered much for all that.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it's a bit like the Offaly senior team of around 2000-2003, where we end up with frustrated wing backs and attacking players filling the whole back line. Player for player I've no huge problem with any of this team, but having said that you've an entire full back line there that I'm guessing would prefer to be playing at least thirty yards up the field. My lack of any obvious alternatives probably means it's a harsh comment, and as I said, on general form you wouldn't drop any of the three of them, but even so.

I saw Niall Darby had a very decent display for GMIT in the Sigerson last week - good to see him get a go at this level.

As for prominent absentees, the ones I'm thinking of are (1) James Rafferty - good enough for this team for the last two years but not now? (2) James Gorman - good enough for the senior team last month but not good enough for the u-21's? (3) Kevin Lynam - must be injured - surely good enough for this and (4) Derek Molloy - I know it's not nailed on that he'd start, but I'm just curious if he's even in the panel. Possibly he'd be available if the hurlers weren't playing the next day?

I wouldn't have been impressed with Rafferty's attitude in a couple of the challenge matches and I presume that would influence Mr Coffey and co. He wasn't playing well either. Derek Molloy is concentrating on the hurling whilst Mr Lynam was dropped a while back - attitude again I'd say!. James Gorman i'd say will be introduced at some stage

Amazing the difference a few years can make........

Offaly Minor v Westmeath 2004 (Replay)

1. Paul McConway (?)
2. Gerry Grehan
3. Richie Dalton
4. Eoghan Byrne
5. James Keane
6. James Flattery
7. Kevin Lynam
8. Derek Molloy
9. James Rafferty
10. Greg Quinn
11. Paul Deehan
12. Sean Ryan
13. Thomas Coughlan
14. Ronan Monaghan
15. Garret Hickey

A pleasant surprise to see the same full back line has made it to under 21,surely an anomaly in modern underage football. Obviously a couple of lads have regressed since 2004 notably Greg Quinn, Ronan Monaghan, James Flattery and Paul Deehan although I am inclined to think that the latter two lads are from Clara and played some part in last years County final.Paul McConway has shown good progress to leap from a Minor goalie to a nailed on starter at wing back for the County senior team.

Dominant Offaly waltz to victory

Offaly 0-13
Carlow 0-9

OFFALY waltzed to an easy win over Carlow in the Leinster U-21 Football Championship in Tullamore yesterday.

The winners recovered from a poor start to lead by 0-8 to 0-4 at half-time and when Carlow corner forward, Glen Doyle was sent to the line for a straight red card offence 12 minutes into the second half, the visitors' goose was cooked.

Ace Offaly forward, Ken Casey joined him for an early shower when he picked up a second yellow card for an innocuous foot block six minutes from time.

While Carlow got two late points to give them a degree of scoring respectability, they never looked like salvaging the game.

SCORERS - Offaly: K Casey 0-5 (4f and 1 45), S Ryan 0-3, R Connor 0-2, R Dalton, C Mahon, G Hickey 0-1 each. Carlow: Brian Murphy 0-5 (4f), J Murphy 0-2, E Doyle, Brendan Murphy 0-1 each.

OFFALY - D Bracken; G Grehan, R Dalton, E Byrne; S Lonergan, P McConway, J Keane; N Smith, C Mahon; N Darby, R Connor, S Ryan; K Casey, T Coughlan, G Hickey. Subs: A Lynam for N Darby (39), J Gorman for G Hickey (48).

CARLOW - D Kelly; S Farrell, S Mernagh, B Rooney; C Nolan, E Doyle, A Murphy; K Jackson, F Murphy; A Doran, J Murphy, Brian Murphy; M Kelly, Brendan Murphy, G Doyle. Subs: D Molloy for M Kelly (39), C Rea (for S Farrell (52).

REF - J Curley (Meath).

Good to hear Casey's red was a second yellow - he'd be a big loss next day out against Longford.

That said, I still think they'll be put to the pin of their collars to get a result out of that game. Longford deserved their win at this level last year, and we've lost at least as many big names as they have. Likewise you'd be disappointed at the inability to register a goal against one of the worst teams in the competition.

Alan Lynam was an interesting introduction to the line up. I still maintain he was a huge loss to the minors of two years ago when he went off to America, he's come on a lot for having to take so much responsibility in the Erin Rovers team. Seeing as three of the starting six forwards failed to score from play, he mightn't be far away from having a lower number on his back next time out.

Funny how even though he's not the most natural footballer around, Seán Ryan's mix of pace and vigour continues to get results. There has to be a lesson for Pat Roe in there somewhere. Pace just for it's own sake is a fairly handy weapon to have in your forward arsenal, and it's sorely missed when absent. Might be no harm factor that in the next time he's thinking of picking a five man midfield and half forward line without a turn of pace among the lot of them.

HAve to agree about Sean Ryan, he put in a great work man like effort on Sunday, kicked a lovely pint too. Alan Lynam made a good impact in my view. Perhaps he should start the next day
