I think that is a fair way of looking at it LS.
Both the club and Paul Cuddy deserved to have been asked to give the go ahead for that message to be published.

Just to be clear, if Paul Cuddy wanted to say X, Y or Z and was happy to go on the record with what he said, then I wouldn't feel the need to get Coolderry's say-so before putting it on a page. I would absolutely contact Coolderry to give them right of reply, it would be up to them if they wanted to put their own side of the situation forward, but you can't give any one side of a situation veto power on what you write.

And it's entirely possible that someone in the Tribune did contact Coolderry to look for a comment, and weren't given one. I've no idea if that happened or not.

I think the reporter in question is very much consistent with very average reporting anyway so it shouldnt come as a shock.

I find John O'Callaghan's reports to be of a far higher standard and he's not a full time GAA reporter.

Long time since I've posted here but need to on this. I dont know KC, not related or connected to him in any way .. but I'd 100pc agree with the above comment. I live in another county now and there is nothing approaching the detail of KC's reporting, and local GAA is the poorer for it. The few OY games I get to, reading a KC report after is always on the money .. and published very soon after the final whistle which is a sign of a true craftsman. To be fair to a few posters here who are consistently excellent, my following of club championships back home would be zero without KC and them. I think all of what LS says about the pressure print media owners bring to bear on journalists is accurate. And what of KC posting that text? If it has gone 'locally viral' then it is well and truly 'in the public domain'. Why then should print media be constrained on re-publishing it? The composition of the managers message is quite reasonable and well worded. I can't see anything defamatory in it. If an exiting manager wants to get 'out front' of the club/county rumour mill, he/she is entitled to send a message to his/her panel to give their side of things. In this case, it went to all on the panel..not the senior lads to do his bidding for him. We live in the real world. Everything sent online is at risk of screenshot/fwd and im sure this was on his mind before he sent it. And isn't it driving interest in the SHC? I for one am far more interested in Kinnity v Coolderry game now.

Just to add on publishing the text - he was fully entitled to do so and in many ways would've been failing in his duty as a journalist if he didn't publish it.

Those unhappy are obviously connected in some way to the club. It's not like it was a big secret anyway, it was sent to a group chat with likely 30+ players who would've fairly quickly shared it around.

Word spreads faster than ever these days, putting the blame on a print journalist is scapegoating. This a club/manager issue, not a journalistic one.

Yes probably.

On its face though, its a simple record of a telecom back and forth which very likely happened as it is set out, so nothing defamatory there.

Especially where he leaves mid-season, the exiting manager is entitled to put 'on the record' to his panel that it was a club-initated decision, not his.

No surprise the club chairman is delivering the hiring & firing messages, especially for the top coaching job in the club. If the club is well administered, there were more arses sitting on the decision making tree than the chairman.

I for one would not be happy with the publishing of it the way it was done. I have no attachment to the club whatsoever. I must say his articles are average as best. Even down to some articles wrote about your own club. He seems to make them more about a hurling angle than anything else. One for which I don't see in any other articles about duel clubs. I read one recently where as the first 7 paragraphs were about hurling in some shape our form.

To publish a message word for word is wrong in my eyes. I know PC and I know he is not best pleased about it. At the end of the day its KC job to sell papers and have more internet traffic but, in saying that maybe he should sit back look at the wider picture before starting to run with a story. I'm sure if it was any of us that sent a message to a group of players in good faith you'd hope it was treated with the same good faith back. Yes of course its going to get shared that's life but, To send out the exact message word for word on the internet is just crazy and a deep lack of disrespect I think.

Its not the case of anything defamatory published but more so the case of respect and KC is around long enough now to have know to shorten down the message and publish a brief outline of it.

Too many thougts posted in whats app are allowed to sit in groups, have had to pull people up on some cr\zy stuff put into committee groups. And if thats not bad enough , the urge to share it is twice as bad.

There is something in this alright, but you will always get people gossiping.
The same would happen after a team meeting, AGM or committee meeting.

However I think the points raised by Full Forward Waster are some of the most valid here to date

All the journalist had to do was word it in such a way as to make it known he had seen that message (without saying that)

How often do we read
“It is believed that…”
“Sources close to the club have said….”
“It is my understanding that…”

People obviously shared the message, they didn’t do so publicly online, and would likely not admit to having done so at all.
He was happy to put his name to it publicly.

Just on this, I was chatting a senior club player with a very competitive club last night, and he mentioned that in their case, if they have a challenge game lined up, the manager doesn't want it leaked so he won't actually tell the players who they're playing, until maybe the night before.

He'll tell them that they have a game, what the throw in time is, and how far it is from their home club pitch to allow players to allocate time, but for fear of being scouted, he doesn't want it advertised who they're playing and where.

I heard this, and on the one hand I can see why you might be tempted to think that way, and to be honest, if you can give your players enough info that they can plan their day and they know that they will roughly be gone for X hours from whatever time in the morning/afternoon, then you're not really putting an extra hardship on them.

On the other hand, it's a very clear statement to the squad as a whole that "I don't trust everyone in this group to keep this information to themselves". And if I was one of the players, I'm not sure how that would sit with me. There would be a temptation to say back to the manager that if there are players (or backroom team people) that you don't trust to behave in a way that doesn't undermine what we're trying to achieve as a group, maybe they shouldn't be in the setup at all?

Or maybe that's just me. Possibly this is par for the course, and expecting club teams to behave like Dublin under Jim Gavin is unreasonable. Just thought it was interesting, so I figured I'd share it here while I'm waiting for the second half of Ferbane vs Shamrocks!

Its club hurling or football. Players chat in work or too family or friends i think we are all getting carried away here social media and and apps make it harder to keep things tight but ultimately most peole in or around the team have an idea whats going on at club level.
