Lads/Lassies,
Was asked the other night in a pub if I knew how Offaly came to wear green, white and gold. I always believed that a club representing the county won some tournament years ago and won the right to wear (close enough to) the national colours.
Anyone know if this is correct?

Re: Question - Offaly Colours
They actually were the national colours at the time. When Ireland was declared a free state after 1916 they chose the colours Green, White and Gold.Mikey wrote: the right to wear (close enough to) the national colours.
Green being the tradional colour for Ireland, White standing for peace, and Gold\Yellow being the tradional colour representing a republic at the time.
However in 1937 the Gold was changed to Orange. The symbolism of this was Green for nationalists, Orange for Unionists and White for the peace between the two sides.
As far as I know it was Clara that won the competition and thats why we have the colours
