John Jocky jones......the truth finally exposed
With the dust settled on the football year (with the exception of the intermediate final, but nobody cares about that) this reporter decided it was time to catch up with the one man who had lit up the football championship for us all, a man who through the past 4 years or so has seen it all and done it all in virtually in every position on the field. No sooner was the Nissan parked up outside Mulvins than I could see this man stepping across the car park to me, wearing the Canary yellow Rhode 1999 county final polo shirt with the dark green combats and the steel toe capped boots. He shot out the hand in front of me and said, "Howya doing big fella? John Jocky Jones Jnr". No sooner had we found a nice seat by the bar in Mulvins than talk turned to more pressing matters!! REPORTER.....JOCK HOW DOES YOUR JUNIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP WIN ON SATURDAY COMPARE TO PAST GLORIES? Jock....Well to be honest big fella, it ranks up there with the Na Fianna game in the Leinster Club Championship!!! REPORTER......BUT YE LOST THAT GAME, BADLY IF I RECALL!!! Jock....Well it meant the same to me, I felt the same nerves before the Junior final as I did before the Na Fianna game, mainly cause I knew I would be marking the oppositions most hyped up player....namely the Scaldy and Dessie Farrell and I roasted the 2 of them. REPORTER.....TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU WERE CONVERTED FROM A STEELY CORNER BACK BLESSED WITH CHEETAH LIKE PACE ON THE RHODE SENIOR TEAM IN 2000 TO BEEN A BATTERING RAM STYLE CENTER FORWARD WHO SUPPLIED PIN POINT PASSES TO THE GIZMO?? Jock......Well it wasn't that big a change really, I've always been considered a versatile player, I've played in every position on the field for them in the past so it came to be that the juniors asked we if I'd come back out of retirement and give it 1 more go, and with the backs all playing well all year our junior manager Benny Kerrigan had the vision to see I was a natural forward. REPORTER.....BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SENIOR SET UP SURELY IT MUST HAVE GREIVED YOU TO SIT AND WATCH THEM IN THE COUNTY FINAL THIS YEAR WHEN YOU COULD HAVE BEEN BRINGING THE DOWLING CUP BACK TO THE CROSSROADS?? Jock....Well no doubt big fella they could have done with me there, if only to up end a few Clara lads, but as the Crow once said "what's done is done, and what's gone is lost forever". REPORTER.....YOUR SOMETHING OF A CELEBRITY UP HERE RHODE, ARE YOU NOT?? Jock.....Well I am now 1 of only 2 men in Rhode with 2 junior A medals in me pocket, the 1st I won in 94 as a sub, and then came the 2nd this year, when boys like the Bugsy had packed it in. REPORTER......WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT JOCK IS IT NOT TRUE YOU ONLY DID 2 TRAINING SESSIONS BEFORE THE COUNTY SEMI FINAL AGAINST DURROW?? (Jock laughs in to his pint before eating the full pint in 1 mouthful) Jock.........well that is true but its only cause I was an exceptional footballer, just like the gizmo....who is the best player I've ever seen!!! REPORTER.......WELL AFTER A STATEMENT LIKE THAT I THINK YOU'VE HAD ENOUGH TO DRINK AND ITS TIME TO HEAD HOME JOCK, ONE FINAL QUESTION, WHATS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT THROUGHOUT YOUR PLAYING CAREER?? Jock...... I suppose winning a senior county medal in 98, or winning 2 junior A medals, or been on the Rhode hurling team that won the junior B final, or marking Dessie Farrell in the Leinster club Championship and holding him to only a point even though it was actually wide, either that or playing indoor soccer for the Boca Junior B's, but I suppose on a personal level the highlight of my career was playing with some of the greats of the game.....Gizmo, Steven Cluxion, Collie Moran, Barry Malone and of course Coffey....a legend!! Lads I hate to point this out....but that Interview was done by myself not by Ger Noonan...not even sure who Ger Noonan is!!! 
Fortunately I'm meeting up with Jock again tonight to get the inside scope from the Rhode camp!!! Thankfully Jock doesn't need Stephen's permission to talk to me!!!
