1961 All Ireland

Post by Rynaghs Biffo »

Can someone do me a favour!!

Remember (ok, some of us weren't even born) the 1961 All Ireland between ourselves and Down that had the largest Croke Park attendence.

Does anyone have the startin 15 that day or even the panel, just doing a bit of research for someone!!

I wouldn't have it to hand but the book that was out for the centenary year would be your best bet there RB!

I'd speculate that book is long out of print RB!

I think it was out for the centenary year. It's a good old book to browse through if you can pick it up.

RB, if you're in Easons, a good place to start your research is the new edition of the handbook of gaelic games. Its published by DB Publications, and is the first edition of same since the passing of Raymond Smith (a leading GAA historian, though in some ways a revisionist historian who viewed football through sky blue glasses and hurling through blue and gold glasses; no time for newcomer upstarts like our own favourites!) who pioneered previous editions. It lists everything you need to know etc., though one particular mistake is carried through from the most recent, 1999, edition, that of the Offaly SHC title-holders where both Rynaghs and Drumcullen are credited with one title more than the both hold - 17 and 18, not 16 and 17).

Great stuff!!!!!

Thanks a million POTH! I'll have a look at that book when i get the chance. I was sitting on the bus beside Harry Donnelly from Arklow to the Leinster Final last sunday and he somw great stories. He said he scored something like 1-7 that day, also the unofficial attendance that day was supposed to be over 100,000 he reckons.

Cheers Again!
