Draws for the 2019 senior (A and B) intermediate and junior (A and B) football and hurling championships will take place on this Thursday Feburary 14th at 8 pm under the stand in O Connor park as there is bingo in the gaa centre there will be parking in o connor park behind the goals.

I’d be concerned at the logistics of championships that at best will take a combined 15 weeks post-summer to complete, given the deadline of the Leinster club championships. Here’s how.

The earliest the championships will resume will be w/e 14th July. That is a fortnight later than last year. That’s to make adequate provision for the hurlers being involved in the All-Ireland eighth-finals, which are on Saturday 6th July.

The post-summer group stages of the hurling will require five weekends, the football group stages will require four weekends. So the group stages can be expected to conclude on weekend of 8th September. We can expect quarter-finals to be on w/e 15th & 22nd September, semi-finals to be on 29th September & 6th October, with finals on 13th & 20th October. That’s all fine – but in recent years the Leinster club football championship’s first round have been on the last Sunday in October.

At that rate, there is no scope for replays or postponements (which could happen due to bereavements or bad weather).

One solution: - play one round of the football (or three rounds of the hurling) in April.

I thought April was allocated for club games. Why not play 2 rounds of football and hurling in that month.
Finally, what happens the SH championships, if Offaly hurlers do not make the McDonagh Cup final?

They could of course. They played two rounds of each last year. Worth noting Offaly hurlers' first championship round is on May 11th, 5 weekends after the SHC's round 2.

If Offaly don't make the Jimmy Cooney final, their last game is on weekend 15th/16th June. Football's round 2 qualifier is a week later (where Offaly exited last year), and the round 3 qualifier is a week after that. Possibility of U20 hurling on Weds 26th June too (if Offaly beat Westmeath and the Carlow v Antrim winners), and there's U20 football against Carlow on Saturday 22nd June, and if they win that, the next round is on Tuesday 2nd July. So there's enough to be going on with.

Better to stick with the schedule, in my opinion. People will have planned holidays around the schedule (when does a teacher who is a club hurler take his holidays?), teams will have planned their preparation to be ready for the scheduled date. There is always the option to play the U20 hurling championship if that particular 'window' comes available.

I wasn't at the recent county board meetings but I'd wager that a big selling point to the football clubs in terms of going to the shorter championship structure is that they'd get rid of the split season. I take the point that there's little or no wriggle room after mid-July, but it could only be three rounds of hurling, not two and one.

I'd presume the key gist was that Seir Kieran get to be senior again. The rest was minor detail, in their eyes at least.


Facetiousness aside for the minute, that's pretty shameless stuff if they did actually propose anything like that.

It would appear similar to the bullsh1t wailing that went on here last year when we were dispatched from Leinster....we should be in it because of our tradition. You either are good enough or not.
Now if it was a dual club coming forward with the proposal there might be some grounds for proposing a 10 team championship with 2 groups. Reduce group games down to 4 rounds. If we ever start competing again at intercounty level we would need a different structure than present. Alternatively club championships could be put on hold until July and get rid of the split season.

I suppose a Master Fixture List for 2019 would be too much to ask for?? Some of us have lives we'd like to plan around!!

In fairness a comprehensive one was set out for 2018 so hopefully one will be forthcoming pretty soon.
