Wexford psychology......

Murphy fumes over Offaly’s lack of respect
09 June 2006

Intelligence reports received by Wexford hurling manager Seamus Murphy seem to suggest the real focus of the Faithful County is on a tilt with Kilkenny in the Leinster final and such a notion has the Rathnure man in a spin.

“Even one of our players met an Offaly player at a function recently, and face-to-face the Offaly man was saying that his lads are not worrying one bit about Wexford, but that they just have their minds fixed on Kilkenny and trying to avenge last year’s result,” said Murphy.

Murphy does acknowledge that there might be some advantage in going into the game as underdog and the lack of pressure that such a situation brings.

“In fact, the only pressure that we are feeling is that, having worked extremely hard over the past number of months, we are keen to produce the big performance which we know we are capable of, and which our lads are confident they can deliver.”

Looks like Wexford are trying to get a psychological edge. Sounds suspiciously like a made up story to me. This is probably to cover up his previous comments about offaly in the league.

I despise this kind of carry on. This "underdog" tag has become so prized that some awful undignified carry on goes on to try and secure it.

This is such pure lies as to be ridiculous. Even if any of the Offaly players were to think such a thing - hardly likely in the first place - they'd never say it. That Murphy is reduced to such nonsense, no doubt to cover up his own faux pax on the radio early in the year suggests that he's reduced to some very tired old tricks to gain an edge.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'm very glad we've got the manager we've got and they're stuck with that clown.

Very lame from Murphy. Duirt bean liom go duirt bean lei.
He knows he made a fool of himself with his "no disprespect to Down or Offaly" remark and is trying to claw back the damage.

This is something he doesn't need to go public with. He could tell his players this in the dressingroom when hurls are being smashed over tables.
He feels he needs to get this out in the public domain, to try and counteract any egg he might have on his face over his previous remarks.

If this was to be a genuine motivational weapon, then he made a mistake in alerting Offaly to it.
