Minor football 2011
Any news on them?
Re: Minor football 2011
Taken from Hoganstand:
"Birr man to manage Offaly minor footballers
22 December 2010
The Offaly minor footballers will be managed by a man from the hurling stronghold of Birr in 2011.
John Ryan will succeed Ken Kelleghan in the role after being nominated by a county board sub-committee.
Former Offaly and Rhode star Kelleghan, who led the Faithful County to a Leinster final appearance this year where they suffered a shock defeat to Longford, decided not to seek another term and instead applied for the under 21 post. However, his hopes of landing that job were dashed when the county board opted for Gracefield man Martin Murphy instead.
Ryan was chosen for the minor job ahead of former county star Vinny Henry (Clara) and John Rouse (Tullamore), who were also in the running. His selectors will be Brian Brereton (Gracefield) and Ger Keyes (Shamrocks).
Ryan has battled the odds to promote football in Birr over many years and has managed the club's intermediate football team. He has also been involved at county level with underage development squads and was the manager of the Offaly under 14 football team that won Leinster and national blitzes this year."
What do ye think of this appointment? I've met Ryan a couple of times, and he seems like a sound fella. Without him, football in Birr would probably die out, and in the past he has done decent job with the offaly underage sides.
I know nothing of the other 2 lads, can any of ye shed any light on them?

I think its a good choice hes being involvd in the unerage set up for a while now.I remember him being over an u.16 team a few years back and the thing i liked most about him he does alot to help quiter lads and lads that might be the only representitive from a club to mix with the other members of the panel.
I wouldnt have a any idea what to expect fom this minor team or what kind of panel they will have .Last years wingfoward cunningham i think was his name from broughans is still there he was brillant lastyear.Other than that i wouldnt know.Best of luck to them anyway.
on an other note best of look to the Rhode minors who apperntly in the leinster final next month i just saw on hoganstand.Any one no who there playing or where it is?

This could be a good move and John Ryan is entitled to a shot at the job.
My impression of him is that he'd be an intelligent sort and would put a bit of thought into the role.
In the past these sort of management jobs have been handed to people simply because they happened to play on a great team and have a few medals.
Its good to see someone who coaches on the ground getting the nod.
