Also Mel Keenaghan should be on that Sarans team I'd say.

I think you're cheating putting in players who weren't in school while you were a pupil there! :P

I'm actually not - my point is that my memory is hazy around who was in school in those years and who was still there in 1990 when I started - so I've included lads from that vintage on the basis that I started a year or two earlier.

In fairness though, that's not a bad list. Although there were lads like Nicky Claffey and Colm Brazil as well that I'd have thought would be close to that team as footballers.
Well the way I read it, the premise was based on their form in school - and those two lads played a few fairly phenomenal schools games. Karol Kelly in particular was probably at his lifetime best at 16.

Would Nicky, Mel and Colm not have all been before that time again? Would have thought so myself.

By the way AZ, still haven't seen your selection.... :D

Nicky, Mel and Braz would have been with myself and Jimmy Grennan. Roddy McNamee and Barry Daly were just before us (we were young lads on their teams). James Hiney was another good footballer from that team, which was a great team. Rocky Maher and Clocker were also there at that time.

I don't think John Ryan or Anthony Kelly went to Sarans either, I'm pretty sure they went to the Vocational School in Ferbane.

Well that's embarrassing, the memory is clearly not what it could be - though I do have an image of Anthony Kelly in a blue jumper rather than a grey one!

Senility setting in young here it seems.....

I assumed he had transferred after we left or something, but I do think he's right. Kelly would have been in the Tech first anyway, we played against him. You may have seen him in the combined schools team at some stage.

That was some amalgamation back then. The likes of Joe Duffy and Colm Kenny, David Cullinane, etc etc were all in the same year as ourselves in Saran's with Jimmy Grennan, Braz, Mel, etc etc. We played in the Leinster Colleges U-15 or something as a combined team, and beat Saint Mels in the final by about 25 points. We had beaten the Marist, finians from Mullingar and some other crowd along the way, maybe Saint Joseph's Rochfortbridge, although that could have been in a different competition.
