Michael Duignan bereaved
16 September 2009

RTE hurling analyst Michael Duignan is mourning the death of his wife Edel after a long battle with illness.

Edel passed away at St. James' Hospital, Dublin yesterday. Her remains will be brought to St. Colmcille's Church, Durrow (on the main Tullamore-Kilbeggan Road) this evening with her funeral Mass taking place at 10am tomorrow.

Before becoming a TV pundit, Michael had enjoyed a long and successful hurling career with St. Rynagh's and Offaly, winning All-Ireland medals with the Faithful County in 1994 and '98. He also played football for Offaly and managed the Meath hurlers to a famous Leinster SHC victory over Laois earlier this decade.

The All-Ireland junior winning Offaly camogie team's planned visit to Michael's home town of Banagher last night was cancelled as a mark of respect.

A unbelievably sad occasion for all concerned.
They got married in 1995 not long after Offaly lost the All Ireland against Clare.
It remember it was on a Friday, because 2FM did that weekly piece where they make a phone call to a bride to be who is getting married later in the day.
Hard to believe it was 14 years ago.

My condolences to all family and friends.

Always very sad when any family loses a mother like this, not to mention the huge loss to the wider circle of family and friends. Deepest condolences to everyone touched by a very tragic loss.

I would like to echo the expressions of sympathy to the Duignan family herein. It's very very sad.

Like BnM, I too recall Ian Dempsey's chat with Edel on the morning of their wedding. She explained that they had met in the vault of the bank in Naas where they both worked at that time!
Pat Donegan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

"Offaly's hurling is exact and abrasive: full of assurance on the ball, devoid of fumbling and slicing and sod-busting". Kevin Cashman RIP (September 1994).

In all my years watching Offaly I liked Michael Duignan as a hurler and a footballer.
He became an excellent member of the RTE team with common sense no bullshit informed opinions on games.
Like most people I do not know him or his family personally, but I do know grief, and I would like to express my deepest sympathies to Michael, his family and his wifes family.

Sorry for your loss Michael.
