Job Application: Managerial position available

Post by RhodeRunner »

Well if the rumors are true and there's an opening i'm going to look at the positives and put in for the job as new Offaly manager

C.V.

I own an O'neils football.

That should get me in.

Any competition for me out there?

I'll throw my name in the hat as a player/manager.
It will help keep the expenses down!

The best way forward for Offaly football, is for the team to get picked here every week by an online poll.

In fairness, we are fairly good at predicting what is likely to happen. Nobody on this board thought that the team that lined out against Roscommon would work and it didn't. Theres something wrong when a number of posters like us can see it coming but the manager cannot. I often wonder how many players/managers ever take a peek at what is written here??
I'm never a fan of these player power things.........players walking away in groups never ends nicely....look at Cork. We can only wait for further news to come through on the matter.

It doesnt' look good when players walk away en masse, and it doesn't reflect well on them or the manager, nor indeed the board. However, I'm a bit short of sympathy for the players at this stage due to what I've watched over the past couple of years in terms of application and effort on the field, as well as stories emanating from the camp about dedication and the like. Obviously the stories could be all rubbish, although I believe some of the lads I talk to, but the evidence of my own eyes is hard to stomach.

Now Roe, Connor and Kilmurray (to a lesser extent!!!) may have alternatively annoyed/baffled/inhibited/disgusted/pissed off the players at various times, but the type of thing seen against Down last year, and various other qualifier games and league games over the past few years has been very hard to watch in terms of the apparent effort.

However, in this case, I definitely think the players have been really messed about, and some of the rumours are nuts altogether. I think the County Board needs to take a long, hard look at itself. ARe they really trying to make us competitive, or just turn up? The players are not coming from a position of strength at all, which probably makes their actions even more bold, and arguably braver, and in this case, from all we've seen and heard, I think they are correct.

I hate player power, and walkouts are anathema to my believes about the GAA, but sometimes enough is enough.

The question the players need to ask themselves is ......'Will you only put in the effort for a big name manager?' I hope the answer is no. You're playing for Offaly, not for Richie Connor, Pat Roe, or Mick O'Dwyer.
Shane Gavin. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

Best of luck with it Bord na Mona man. You certainly appear to have a better understanding of Offaly football compared to our county board. The players are a disgrace anyway. We've all heard the rumours about the majority of them. Go out any weekend during season and i guarantee you you'll meet plenty of the panelists living it up. In fact i met id say half the panel not so long ago out partying like good things and they were training the next morning. And the results are all the fault of management, i dont think so. A week before national league opener in fact against Roscommon.

Richie is a proud Offaly man and fair play to him for taking the job. I dont think he had a good head for selection and now im hearing about poor training strauctures. We can criticise that but fair play to him for doing the right thing and walking away for the good of the county.

County board needs to grow some brains, and the players need to grow up full stop.

I'd be interested in how many people in the county or outside have completed the coaching schemes up to level 4 (is it?) as was discussed here before. While Offaly are a shambles, it would be interesting to see who would be qualified or even interested in taking it on. In recessionary times a lot of bigger name managers would not be enticed in. And it's getting to be a bit of a poisoned chalice at this stage. SO it may be a complete unknown that gets pulled in for this one. Look at Jason Ryan for example - it doesn't always have to be someone that's been round the block

You will find that no one will want the job; the county board wont want to look foolish in the interim and they will appoint a temporary manager just like Roscommon did last year. What will happen is that a 'former great', who a) has no allegiance to Richie Connor or b) is that ignornant it wont matter, will take the job for the year.
Candidates include Laz Molloy who is sufficiently in the click of the county board realms or someone like Brendan Lowry who with brief managerial expierence would have sufficient support from the west Offaly pocket who might vote enmasse with each other

I could have sworn I heard Pat Teehan mutter this when he was on the phone to me.
He must have been looking at the list of other candidates at the time!

All I need are a few selectors now to finish the package.
