Horseleap Question
Horseleap Question
Hi Folks,
I have a question and I was told that this might be the place to get it answered. I'm moving to Offaly later this year and am keen to get my son and daughter registered with the local GAA club. The thing is we're moving to Horseleap and one of the locals there was trying to tell me that the local club, St Joseph's play with a village called Streamstown in the Westmeath (touchy subject here today) championship. I know for a fact that our house is definitely in Offaly but does that mean they'll have to play with them? Surely that's not right? They'll be going to school in Clara. Any help much appreciated.

Re: Horseleap Question
If they are in school in clara then register them with clara. Their schoolmates will all be playing with them so they would fit in quicker.

Re: Horseleap Question
I don't know the exact border around there but it would most likely be Tubber- though Clara is fine too. Tubber is an excellent club in terms of the whole community being involved and very passionate about their football, plus through Brosna Gaels you have access to hurling as well - I'd suggest they'd be your way to go, though I don't know the border exactly.
A lot of Tubber kids would go to school in Clara too btw.

Re: Horseleap Question
Thanks for the replies but I just wonder is it as simple as that? In Dublin where we live there's no"parish rule" but I thought Offaly and other counties were different? If we're going to live in Horseleap parish would that tie the kids into playing for the club in that parish? Or can you just pick your club - eith Clara or Tubber??? What if they went to school in Horseleap instead? Could they still play for Clara/Tubber? Sorry about the questions but I wouldn't want any hassle in the future about playing for the "wrong" club. I just didn't think it was that easy to decide who to play for. But maybe its different where a parish or club crosses county boundries?

Re: Horseleap Question
Yes, there is a parish rule in Offaly where you have to play with the parish where you live or work. You can’t pick and choose though and in the case of a schoolgoing child, the location of the school cannot be substituted for the place of work.
Isn’t there a case in Newbridge going through the courts where a parent wants his children to play with the town club rather than the rural parish where they live?

Re: Horseleap Question
If the house is in Offaly then they play with Tubber. Makes no difference where they go to school or anything like that. The Parish rule is in play if its in the same county but when a parish splits across a county boundry then it's down to the location of the gaff. Take Doon for example. It's in Ballinahown parish (Westmeath) but anyone on the Offaly side of the county boundry plays with Doon (Offaly) and anyone on the Westmeath side plays with Castledaly (Westmeath). The school in Ballinahown will be made up of kids from both sides of the county line, they play school ball together but come the summer go play in different county competitions.
In your case it's the same, once the house is in Offaly the kids will have to play with Tubber with a possibility of Clara depending on the exact location of the house but unlikely. Deciding on Clara or Tubber will be down to the Parish rule. Tubber is an excellent club so they'll be very well looked after.

Re: Horseleap Question
If you are in the Offaly part of Horseleap, then you would be in the same parish as Clara.
Tubber would be in the cross border parish with Rosemount.
It depends where the house is.

The house is definitely in Offaly - thats the only thing I'm 100% certain on! It looks like we're in the same parish as Clara so. I was told it was Horseleap parish but looking at your map they seem to be the same thing. Looks like it'll be Clara club rather than Tubber then or does anyone have another arguement to put forward?!
Thanks to all.

Re: Horseleap Question
As BnMM has stated, you'll be in the Clara parish in Horseleap. As for which club to choose, check out both clubs yourself and make a decision. For some reason, traditionally, a lot of the Horseleap men have played with Tubber. There might be some historical reason for this, but I don't know what it is.
I'll try to find out
