Inter Q-final

Post by Muck Savage »

Anyone at the Walsh Island vs. Edenderry game over the weekend, seems like Edenderry are n the way back up. I expected a much closer game than the scoreline suggests.

Sorry Muck Savage, I meant to put a report up on the site yesterday on this game. I was hindered from doing a decent report simply because in that kip of a Bracknagh there wasn't even a programme available, not to mention a scoreboard to even keep track of the scores. I will give a very rough account of what went on, the first half was very even in a very scrappy and free ridden 30 mins or so. Edenderry went in at the interval leading 1.4 to 0.6 and you certainly wouldn't forecast that the reds would run out such convincing winners at the end, but in the second half they went up through the gears and tagged on some lovely points and as some Walsh Island people around me commented that Edenderry were really too strong for this grade.
For the Island, their two obvious threat in the forwards were of course Willie Mulhall and Rory Connor who between them scored about 7 points, Willie Mullhall in particular kicked 3 very nice points in a row in the early stages of the second half, Alan Mulhall fielded some very good ball especially in the first half where he ventured quite alot around the midfield and centre half forward position, for Edenderry the full and half back lines were solid all through the game. Cillian Farrell started at full forward for the throw in but once the game started he stayed very deep and at times was helping out in his own half back line and once he got posession he made some very direct runs which unsettled the Island backs, a bit of a throwback to his county days. Basil Malone worked very hard at corner forward and scored a couple of nice points.
My information is pretty crappy and my full apologies for that, perhaps TRUE RED was at the game and he would know all the Edenderry guys and would obviously give a more Informative account from the winners perspective.
My one final point on this game on a an incident that happened roughly about the midway point in the second half, Rory Connor and Johnny Hurst went for a ball that went out of play and over the end line where there was a little nudging at each other but nothing out of the ordinary, Connor went trotting back to his position when Hurst gently threw the ball at him which struck him on the back of the head, Connor went down like he was struck by a sniper which was absolutly pathetic to watch, and to think this wimp was on our County panel this year. Its no wonder Offaly football is the way it is. EDENDERRY 2.14 WALSH ISLAND 0.11.

It seems that Edenderry had a number of former stars back for this one, including Adrian Mahon, Cillian Farrell and Basil Malone. If they can keep them interested, they'll be hard to stop.

I haven't seen Ballyfore or really followed them too well, but they'll have their hands full containing guys that have played at County level and won Dowling Cup medals.

Friday evening might provide an insight into whether the remaining teams at this level can stop Edenderry. Doon and Raheen is a very tough one to call, but I think Doon will sneak it if they can get the big names firing.

Could there be a Cameo appearance by an ageless Vinnie Claffey...watch this space.
