Re: Offaly Senior Football 2026
I stand shocked, and corrected. That's a serious win away from home against a very decent team, and it sets them up very well for the remainder of this competition.Lone Shark wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2026 11:38 am The Offaly team of 2025 is absolutely favourites for this competition, or at worst, narrowly second favourites to Down. The Offaly team of 2026 is nowhere close to that level.
I would never place money down against an Offaly team, but the three point handicap on this looks very low, in my opinion. Challenge match form is not reason enough for me to believe we're significantly further on from where we were when Laois opened us up time and again.

Credit where it's due to players and management who's backs have been seriously to the wall ..not a pundit in the country would have gone for us today....not many Offaly fans would have given us a hope today .....still without the last two club footballers of the year in the county available and the player who makes us tick cathal Flynn....also still missing our best goalie since padraig kelly....well done to all involved

Re: Offaly Senior Football 2026
i was at the game and when clare went 1.8 to 0.9 up playing with a strong wind i feared the worst.but the lads showed unreal guts and determination .and you could see the confidence seeping back into them. as if they realised "were not a bad auld flock" to quote pilk. onward and upward. and i must say hyland is a top class forward. i didnt realise how good he was.
Re: Offaly Senior Football 2026
As I said in a previous post we should completely win this taligan cup with the exception maybe of down but they are no world beaters wexford nearly beaten them. Clare are not the team they were a few year back and finished mid table in division 3. Offaly are about 20/1 to win the cup a great bet I think. Great first win of the year best of luck in the next round lads.

Great to get the first win after what has been a tough year. Hopefully the start of a much more welcome streak!
Congrats to them!!

Re: Offaly Senior Football 2026
Super win. Finally we got over the line. Couple of observations. Higgins back was major factor. Ability to win few kickouts gave us platform to compete on kickouts. We had Higgins, Leavy, Hayes and McEvoy all in middle third. That was major advancement on what we have had to date this year. O Neill and Hyland both very busy and did very well. Hyland caught fire at times and carried us at times. Tierney movement very good and won lots of ball - just wasnt able to get away for shot. Plunkett made impact and central to us winning this game even if he only played 20 mins or so. Poland is able to compete at this level. With more time he will develop.
All that said, if you were from Clare, youd be wondering how they lost the game. Their shooting was very bad and dropped loads into Melia. They could easily have won so lets not paper over the cracks - they are still there. Clare looked a more athletic team than us for lots of it but didnt have the football or belief to kill the game when they went two ahead early in 2nd half. All the better for us. Great to win but lots of room for improvement still.

Re: Offaly Senior Football 2026
I agree with jimbob about Clare's shooting
Nearly as as bad as Mayo I thought
Cormac Egan looked a bit lost yesterday
His style of play is hard on the body.
The wind yesterday had a massive impact on the game it kept changing direction every five minutes
Explains the wides .

Credit where credit is due, that is a great win for the players and management. Proved all of us doubters wrong and hopefully they continue to drive on.

Great win and fair play to the panel for sticking at it when it must have been tempting to throw in the towel after the Laois game. Maybe this win is the turning point for management and players to let the shackles off and have a real crack at salvaging something from the year.

Well done to all. The players stood up and chose to be lions instead of lambs!
