Re: New Hurling League.

Padraig Boland makes a good strong statement on this today, picked up by RTE, Irish Times etc. Comparing the rejigging of the league to suit Cork to the attempts by French and English rugby teams to reinvent the European cup to suit their own - financial - desires. Calls a spade a spade, fair play ...

Re: Offaly All Ireland Referees

Absolutely take your point POTH about the rulebook either being enforced or amended, and absolutely striking with the hurl is and should be a red card offence.
I suppose I was pre-empting the hard time Gavin was going to get by saying he did a good job overall and that I could see where he was ...

Re: Offaly All Ireland Referees

Brian Gavin might well get it in the neck for his performance today but I think he did very well. I feel he reffed it as a supporter would want it rather than to the letter of the law as regards the possible sending off and the extra extra time for Clare's equaliser. The striking incident in the ...

Re: Offaly minor hurlers

The big issue though is parents, very few encourage the kids out to play football and hurling.
Kids are basically unfit, I can see now a situation where we are going to have to do fitness training as part of training u10s and 12s in the not too distannt, as opposed to skills and games.
Kids have ...

The problem in Offaly is your living on tradition
We've enough angst of our own on this issue as you'd see in every other thread on here, thanks.

Re: Faithful Pioneers: Offalys Football Breakthrough, 1960/6

Just one other thing, I went to one of the shops selling the book especially to buy it and searched all over, expecting a prominent display somewhere. In the end I had to ask at the counter, where the girl rummaged around and got a copy for me. Hopefully this was because they'd only just arrived ...

Re: Faithful Pioneers: Offalys Football Breakthrough, 1960/6

Got a copy of the book today and having skimmed through parts of it quickly would highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in Offaly football, some great first hand insights. As POTH mentioned, it's unfortunate the print is so small, particularly as many who would have personal memories of ...

Re: Hurling League Restructuring

I think the new league structure is daft. It's literally promoting a two-tiered structure in hurling. Teams like Offaly need to be playing the top teams. It is also very hard on Limerick and Wexford who are effectively being demoted. I accept that the GAA wants to minimise one-sided games but in ...

Re: Toughness in Football

remember the free Clare got to draw the first game in 1998 i left that day feeling like we were rode out of a win, so how do kildare feel
they had no luck last year with down's square ball goal. maybe they have no luck for putting Down flags out the windows in kildare town in 1960 and 61

Re: Offaly Hurlers catch a break?

You can see this guy's point from a Wicklow hurling point of view, and yes, as has been pointed out by ManfromDelmonte, this new system would primarily benefit the strongest division 1 counties. In reality, we'd be in a 6 county division 2 in all but name, calling it 1B makes no odds, but from an ...

Re: Offaly Hurlers catch a break?

Loks like a better system alright. The League format should be such that the best interests of hurling in the greatest number of counties are looked after and obviously the present system doesn't do that. This way established counties like Offaly, Wexford, Clare, Limerick and Antrim have less chance ...

Re: Toughness in Football

Interesting article I thought in today's Irish Times by Seán Moran http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/sport/2011/0629/1224299729047.html
I wouldn't agree that MacLochlainn on Brogan was a foul, and to be honest I wouldn't even assume, as the article suggests, that the ref's instinct was to "call it ...
